SUCCESS STORIES

While working with another psychotherapist for two years, Jim’s health deteriorated. His psychiatrist prescribed medications, insisted that Jim begin outpatient hospital treatment, and advised him to see a cognitive behavioral therapist. The therapist referred him to Dr. Smith to address his depression.

After learning about Jim’s childhood with an alcoholic father and a passive mother, Dr. Smith used EMDR to enhance Jim’s ability to care for himself instead of relying on dysfunctional people in his life. Then Dr. Smith used Neurofeedback for his mood disorder. Jim progressed well - setting limits with people he loved, and taking better care of himself. Remarkably, he also stopped needing to take antidepressants.

Linda* hadn’t experienced a single day when she wasn’t thinking about killing herself. She attempted suicide once while in college, and felt so guilty about hurting her family, that she knew she would never try again. However, the thought was a constant companion that kept her from enjoying her accomplishments, or even the simple pleasure of reading a book. Neurofeedback and talk therapy enabled Linda to release a self-destructive instinct that she used to punish herself when she was angry at someone. She began to set better limits with her family, and looked forward to activities that would please her, even if others were inconvenienced or critical of her.
